Odisha Sunetra Yojana: Universal Eye Health Programme (UEHP): As part of its massive Universal Eye Care for All by 2023 initiative, the Odisha government has introduced the Sunetra scheme. In the last four years, the state has launched Sunetra Yojana four times. The Odisha government said at the time of the inaugural launch in 2017 that everyone will have access to universal eye care (the deadline was later adjusted to 2023).

The number of times the government can introduce a program? Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s flagship program, Sunetra, for universal eye health, has reportedly been introduced at least four times in the last four years if statements from the state administration are to be accepted.

First launch of Sunetra Universal Eye Health Program

Claiming that Odisha is the first state in the country to create a universal eye health program to provide comprehensive eye care to all and protect people from vision-related complications. The Chief Minister launched this scheme for the first time on 12 October 2017 on the occasion of World Sight Day.

The state government had then planned to spend Rs 682 crore in the next five years and aimed at complete eradication of cataracts and setting up vision care centers at the CHC level in all the districts. It was also announced for Odisha to provide free treatment for diabetes. Second launch of Sunetra scheme
